Its main fatty acid is alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential fatty acid the body cannot make on its own. That is why flaxseed oil capsules — usually softgels — have become a staple of the global supplement market and one of the most popular sources of vegan omega-3, especially for vegetarian and vegan consumers and for people who prefer not to take fish oil.

The same chemistry that makes flaxseed oil valuable also makes it difficult. ALA is highly unsaturated and reacts readily with oxygen, so the oil turns rancid and bitter faster than most vegetable oils. This guide explains what flaxseed oil is, how plant omega-3 differs from fish-oil omega-3, why oxidative stability decides product quality, and what a brand needs to prepare to launch a flaxseed oil softgel in Thailand and Southeast Asia — from raw material selection and formulation to manufacturing and Thai FDA registration.

Looking for a flaxseed oil softgel manufacturer? Flaxseed contains three groups of valuable components: the omega-3 fatty acid ALA, lignans and dietary fibre. The pressed oil carries the fat fraction, in which ALA typically makes up around half of all fatty acids — several times more than common cooking oils such as soybean or rice bran oil.

Flaxseed oil is therefore used both as a functional food ingredient and as a raw material for dietary supplements. A review by Goyal and colleagues (2014) describes its use in baked goods, beverages, dairy products and capsules, and its continuing role as a research topic in cardiovascular nutrition.

Flaxseed oil benefits — what the research says. Its value comes mainly from ALA, an essential fatty acid, together with vitamin E and natural antioxidants. Human studies have mostly looked at blood lipids, blood pressure and blood sugar, with mixed results, and the US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) notes that flaxseed oil supplements do not seem to help with weight loss. For a supplement, any benefit stated on the label must stay within what the regulator allows (see the section on what brands need to prepare).

For a brand owner, the clearest selling point is simple: 100% plant-based omega-3, with no fishy taste or odour, suitable for vegan consumers and people with seafood allergies, and with a sustainability story that is easier to tell than fish oil.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”23729″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=”” parallax_scroll=”no” woodmart_inline=”no”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]

Flaxseed Oil vs Fish Oil: ALA vs EPA and DHA

 [/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”” woodmart_inline=”no” text_larger=”no”]
Omega-3 is not a single molecule. ALA from plants is a shorter-chain fatty acid (18 carbons), while EPA and DHA from fish oil are long-chain fatty acids. The body can convert some ALA into EPA and DHA, but not much. Reviews by Burdge and Calder (2005) and by Baker and colleagues (2016) agree that conversion of ALA to EPA is limited and further conversion to DHA is very low in most people, with women tending to convert more than men.

This matters for positioning. Brands should not present flaxseed oil as a like-for-like replacement for fish oil. The honest and label-safe message is: a plant source of ALA for consumers who choose plant-based omega-3.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”23703″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=”” parallax_scroll=”no” woodmart_inline=”no”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]

Why Does Flaxseed Oil Go Rancid So Quickly?

 [/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”” woodmart_inline=”no” text_larger=”no”]
ALA has three double bonds in its structure, and the more double bonds a fatty acid has, the faster it reacts with oxygen. This process, lipid oxidation, starts when the oil is exposed to air, light and heat. Peroxides form first and then break down into aldehydes and ketones, which cause rancid odour, bitter taste and loss of nutritional value.

In tropical markets such as Thailand the challenge is bigger. Year-round heat and humidity, long transport routes and warm retail shelves can change an oil that looked perfect on the day it was made. Cold pressing with controlled oxygen and temperature. Cold pressing preserves fatty acids and natural antioxidants better than solvent extraction with heat. Keeping the oil away from air during pressing reduces oxidation at the source.

2. Natural antioxidants. Common options are vitamin E (tocopherols) and rosemary extract. Another research-backed approach is to bring the flaxseed’s own polyphenols back into the oil. Fruehwirth and colleagues (2020) at the University of Vienna showed that conventional pressing leaves most polyphenols behind in the press cake; by using the oil itself to extract polyphenols from the press cake, polyphenol content in the oil rose up to about 12-fold under the best conditions, and resistance to oxidation increased by 38%.

3. Protection from oxygen and light at every step. Nitrogen flushing of storage tanks and before filling, opaque packaging and cool storage all slow oxidation.

4. A dosage form that limits oxygen exposure. Softgels suit flaxseed oil well because the gel shell seals each dose, so the oil is not exposed to air every time the bottle is opened. For drinks and foods, flaxseed oil can also be used as an encapsulated powder.

On the human side, a randomised crossover study in 19 healthy women, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (2026), found that polyphenol-enriched flaxseed oil taken before high-intensity interval training (HIIT) suppressed the post-exercise rise of oxidised lipids in plasma compared with water. It was a short, single-dose study, so it is best used as scientific background for product development rather than as a label claim.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”23700″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=”” parallax_scroll=”no” woodmart_inline=”no”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]

Why Softgel Capsules Are the Right Format for Flaxseed Oil

 [/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”” woodmart_inline=”no” text_larger=”no”]
Beyond protection from oxygen, softgels bring several advantages for both consumers and brands.

Masks taste and odour — consumers never taste the oil or its bitterness directly.

Precise dose per capsule — clear ALA content per serving for the nutrition label.

Shell options for each market — gelatin shells for mainstream markets, plant-based shells for vegan and halal consumers.

Room for combinations — for example vitamin E to support stability, or blends with other oils such as black cumin oil, depending on the brand concept (compatibility and stability of every blend must be tested).

Premium shelf appeal — clear golden capsules look clean and trustworthy.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”23735″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=”” parallax_scroll=”no” woodmart_inline=”no”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]

What Brands Need to Prepare Before Making Flaxseed Oil Softgels in Thailand

 [/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”” woodmart_inline=”no” text_larger=”no”]
Product category and regulation. Flaxseed oil softgels sold to be taken in addition to normal meals are classified as dietary supplements under Thai Ministry of Public Health Notification No. 293 (B.E. 2548 / 2005).
